Frequently Asked Questions

Description
Is Reflexology safe?
Yes.
Practitioners trained in Reflexology have the knowledge and skills to work with people of all ages, from newborn babies to the elderly, including the provision of professional reflexology during pregnancy, chemotherapy and palliative care.

Is Reflexology painful?
Reflexology can be extremely relaxing, however if there is a part of the body that is unbalanced, the corresponding reflex point may feel sore or tender whilst we work to rebalance the area.  Continual monitoring and communication ensures that we will always work within your comfort-zone.

Is Reflexology ticklish?
No.
By working with moderate to firm pressure and informing you what to expect, we can avoid any ticklish sensations.

How many treatments will I need?
The greatest benefits may take three or more treatments to be noticed, as it may take time for any patterns of imbalanced energy flow to be altered.  Also, some people naturally respond quickly to treatment, others take longer.

What does a treatment entail?
Your first session will last about 1hr 30 mins, in order to obtain a picture of your medical history and current lifestyle.  We will discuss any ailments or areas of unease you have.
Treatments last between 45 mins and 1 hour depending on what your feet are telling us.
You will be made comfortable on my reclining reflexology chair, or your own easy chair if you prefer with your feet raised.
Sock removal is the only undressing necessary in order to bare your feet for treatment.
Your feet will be cleansed and the treatment will begin with some gentle relaxation massage.
A programme of precise pressure techniques follows in order to work all the reflexes of the feet and their corresponding organs, glands, joints and muscles of the body.
The treatment session ends with deep breathing and further relaxation massage.

Should I do anything differently following a session?
 - Drink a little extra water for the next 24 hours to aid cleansing process
 - Take extra rest if possible to enhance the effects of the treatment

How will I feel generally?
You should feel more relaxed and calm following a treatment.  Some people feel energised and invigorated, whilst others experience a sense of tiredness.

Are there any possible side effects to the treatment?
Reflexology may help the body to eliminate waste products and toxins.  Therefore, you may experience increased bowel movements, increased urination or perspiration, a runny nose etc.  Some clients may also notice that an area of imbalance gets worse before it gets better.  This is known as a 'healing crisis' and should be viewed as a positive response as the body is attempting to rebalance itself.

Do Reflexologists have to be registered in order to practice?
No.
Currently in the UK, there is no mandatory regulation of Reflexologists. This means that the standard of work varies considerably.
I graduated from The Devon School of Reflexology with a Level 3 Diploma through ABC Awards, one of the largest vocational awarding bodies in the UK.  I am a Member of the Association of Reflexologists and as such, I had to meet strict entry criteria; I am insured and hold a First Aid Certificate.  I am also committed to regular post-graduate training to keep my skills up to date.

Can a reflexologist diagnose medical conditions?
No.
Reflexologists cannot diagnose or prescribe.  Please seek medical help if you need a diagnosis.
Reflexology can be used alongside conventional medical treatment.  As Doctors agree that 75% of health issues can be linked to nervous and physical tension, a therapy that can reduce stress and tension, improve blood and lymph circulation, thus improving assimilation of nutrition and elimination of toxins, strengthening the immune system and calming the nervous system is of great benefit.  Reflexology facilitates the body's natural healing processes and thereby enhances the body's health and vitality.
